The average nominal wage of Italian workers has not kept pace with inflation in recent years leading to a significant drop in purchasing power, pensions-and-social-security agency INPS said in a report presented on Thursday.
It said the average wages of private-sector workers (excluding domestics) rose by 14.7% between 2014 and 2024 while those of public workers rose by 11.7%.
It said that in both cases this was well behind the rate of inflation. The agency said there was a difference of nine percentage points between the increase in nominal salaries determined by national collective contracts, excluding overtime, and the rise in prices in the 2019-2024 period.
It said the average annual average salary for private employees was 24,486 euros in 2024 while the average salary of public employees was 35,350.
