Govt approves decree regulating use of AI by law enforcement (Ansa)

We won’t have Big Brother says Piantedosi

Premier Giorgia Meloni’s cabinet on Wednesday approved a decree regulating the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) by police, a measure passed to comply with European regulations.

Artificial Intelligence by law enforcement,” Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi told a news conference after the meeting. “The goal is to provide police forces with the most advanced features to improve the efficiency of their operations. “It establishes that AI is an important tool in supporting police action, (but) without ever replacing the role and decisions of humans. “The whole of the legislation is imbued with this principle.

“Any use of artificial intelligence for security must be subject to qualified human review and oversight. “Furthermore, the protection of personal and sensitive data must be guaranteed. “AI is a support tool, not an automated policeman: final decisions will always remain with humans. “There are no plans for mass surveillance or a generalized ‘Big Brother’ system, and the use of large biometric databases is prohibited”.

He said it would be possible to use AI both for crime prevention, such as in cases of danger related to terrorism or human trafficking, with authorization from judicial authority, and after crimes are committed. “Here too, safeguards are provided,” Piantedosi said.
