From Mumbai, India, to Pantelleria: Monday, July 20, marks International Moon Day, a United Nations observance, commemorating the anniversary of the first manned moon landing, which occurred on July 20, 1969, during NASA’s Apollo 11 mission.
An event that includes events around the world, including one in Italy on the island of Pantelleria, centered on art.
Established to commemorate the historic success of the Apollo 11 mission, when astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin set foot on the moon and made a reality of what had seemed impossible for centuries—that of allowing humanity to walk on another celestial body. International Moon Day aims to highlight the achievements made thus far in lunar exploration, raise awareness of the importance of sustainable exploration, and, above all, emphasize the need for all countries to cooperate for peaceful exploration.
But the Day is not only a celebration of past successes, but also a testament to future efforts for the exploration and sustainable use of the Moon, in a spirit of international cooperation and scientific progress. For this reason, numerous initiatives are being organized around the world by the Moon Village Association, spanning several days, starting in Santiago, Chile, with observation programs of our satellite, and in Mumbai, where sustainability and the issues of safeguarding and conserving the lunar environment will also be discussed.
This program also includes Pantelleria, where on July 21st the island will be celebrated with a cultural event combining art, literature, cinema, and local traditions.
