In 2024, the European Union’s economy proved resilient despite the international environment, with growth of 1 percent, despite marked differences between countries. Italy’s growth stood at 0.7 percent, with debt rising to 134.9 percent of GDP. According to 2024 data from the European Commission, Italian payments to the EU budget amounted to €15.7 billion, while credits reached €22.4 billion, of which €9.4 billion from Next Generation EU. This is highlighted by the Court of Auditors in its report on financial relations with the European Union and the use of European funds for 2024, approved by the Audit Section for European and International Affairs with resolution no.
14/2025. This positive balance is precisely thanks to these resources.
Cohesion policy, the Court of Auditors specifies, is experiencing delays in implementing the 2021-2027 programs, with spending and commitment levels lower than in previous cycles. Interreg programs demonstrate project capacity, although difficulties persist in activating synergies with other European funds.
